Natural History Museum Dethrones British Museum as UK’s Top Tourist Draw
London, UK – Dinosaurs and ancient wonders have officially battled it out for the title of Britain’s most sought-after visitor experience, with the Natural History Museum soaring to the top spot for 2025. For the first time, the South Kensington institution welcomed a record-breaking 7.1 million people through its doors, unseating the British Museum from its two-year reign.
A Record-Breaking Roar
The impressive surge in visitors, a 13% jump from the previous year, is attributed in part to the museum’s iconic blue whale skeleton, Hope, which stands sentinel in the main hall. This incredible turnout not only marks a personal best for the Natural History Museum but also sets a new benchmark for visitor numbers at any museum or gallery in a single year. It underscores a public appetite for engaging with the natural world, even amidst ongoing economic pressures.
Leisure Pounds and Lasting Experiences
The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (Alva) reported a general uptick in visits across its 409 sites, reaching 165 million. However, Bernard Donoghue OBE, director of Alva, noted that numbers are still shy of pre-pandemic levels. “Visitor attractions are the places that people prize most,” he commented, “and provide the experiences that people, even in a cost-of-living crisis, are most loathe to give up.” This sentiment highlights the enduring value people place on cultural and educational outings when making their leisure spending decisions.
The British Museum, while relinquishing its top position, is set for a strong comeback with the highly anticipated arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry later this year. The top five list also includes Windsor Great Park, Tate Modern, and the National Gallery, showcasing the diverse appeal of the UK’s cultural landscape. As visitor habits evolve, these institutions continue to adapt and offer compelling reasons for people to explore and connect.
