Ronnie O’Sullivan has etched his name even deeper into snooker folklore, achieving the sport’s highest-ever professional break with a phenomenal 153 at the World Open.

A Historic Frame Unfolds

The seven-time world champion achieved this astonishing feat in the opening frame of his quarter-final clash against Ryan Day in Yushan. This remarkable break set the tone for a commanding 5-0 victory, showcasing O’Sullivan’s enduring brilliance on the green baize.

The stage was set when O’Sullivan, renowned for his tactical acumen, left Day in a perilous snooker at the very start of the frame. Day’s subsequent struggle to escape the trap gifted O’Sullivan a “free ball,” a rare opportunity to pot any ball as if it were the cue ball. O’Sullivan seized this chance with both hands, potting the green as his 16th red. He then followed this with a string of spectacular shots, including 15 reds, 13 further blacks, and two pinks, before expertly clearing the remaining colours to compile the record-breaking 153.

Breaking New Ground

This monumental achievement surpasses the previous professional record of 148, set by Jamie Burnett during the UK Championship qualifiers in 2004. For fans of the sport, it’s a testament to O’Sullivan’s unparalleled skill and his ability to continually redefine the boundaries of what’s possible in snooker.

“Just want to say a big shoutout to all the people who have been messaging me, congratulating me on the 153,” O’Sullivan shared in a video posted on X. “It was a pretty cool moment, really happy to do it. Thank you to everyone out there that has supported me.”

O’Sullivan’s quest for another title continues as he prepares to face China’s Wu Yize in the semi-finals, after Wu secured his spot by defeating Mark Allen 5-1. The snooker world watches with bated breath to see what magic the Rocket might conjure next.
